The Early Service (8:00 AM)
A quiet, reflective service, approximately fifty minutes in length, this worship uses the simple and time-honored traditional language service (called "Rite I") from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer. The service follows a deliberate outline: we gather with some brief prayers of invocation and praise. A "collect" prayer is offered, gathering our thoughts for the day around a central theme that is then reflected in the appointed scripture texts for the day. These are taken from a calendar of Bible readings called the Common Lectionary. A Sermon based on the scripture lessons of the day in light of contemporary issues is preached by an ordained minister who has been theologically and biblically trained and educated. Normally this is the Rector of the Parish, who normally preaches 10-15 minutes. Decide for yourself! The
sacrament of Holy Communion (which is open to everyone) is also "celebrated"
as part of this worship experience each week. There is no congregational
singing at this service. Following worship there is always a brief
and informal time for welcoming and socializing, where visitors and newcomers
have the opportunity to easily find out more about the Saint John's parish
family and church programs. |
