SAINT JOHNıS PART OF "
ONEı"

With the hope Saint Johnıs will always have a vision greater than
ourselves, the Vestry leadership unanimously agreed at itıs June meeting to
endorse the ONE Campaign, and now invite the congregation to join us.

ONE represents the 1 billion people who would gain relief if the
governments of the world forgave the debts of the poorest nations.  It would
mean the possibility that nations could develop.  In the Old Testament, this
was considered to be the year of Jubilee, though there is no evidence that
debt forgiveness ever happened in Israelıs history even though it was one of
Godıs commands.  We can learn from the mistakes of the past. People as
diverse as Rick Warren, Billy Graham and Bono have said yes to ONE.  Take a
look for yourself: http://www.onecampaign.org/

Project coordinator and Vestry member Jane Rossoni explains: ³There was
great news from London that the G8 finance ministers have agreed to write
off the debt of the poorest nations and we should give thanks for that.  But
this does not mean that the churches and Christıs people should stop working
and praying for an end to poverty.  The logic for joining this campaign
seems reasonable.  If a country is spending $10M a year in interest payments
and their people are dying of AIDS, wouldnıt it be better spent on their
people?!  The big question is what the governments who are forgiven will do
with the resource.  This is part of the negotiation , but it is a moot
concern if the debt remains.²

If you click the above link and check out the web site you will find
they only ask you to consider signing the declaration and add your voice
to fighting a global problem that will someday touch all of us. ONE white
wristbands are available (adult size & kidıs size) via the church office for
a donation of $2 each, for all who are interested.
